September 1, 2010

Is it really September already? That means the arts organizations will be starting their seasons and there are some great things ahead!

Andre Watts kicks off the 100th Austin Symphony season

A fitting start to the centennial season! The famed pianist will perform Shuman and Beethoven in Dell Hall at the Long Center.

Carmina Burana

More than 100 choral singers, 60 musicians, and Ballet Austin dancers bring the drama of this iconic piece to life.
Sept 24-26 at the Long Center

A Woman's Story told in a pendant

Margaret Patterson told me about Carolyn Graves who makes pendants from jewels and other small keepsakes that tell something about the women who owns them. Check her Web site to see some of these unusual pieces. You can buy one of these or contact her through the Web site to have your own story told! $70-$125.

One open Juniper Hills cooking class

As usual almost all of the classes at Juniper Hills Farm are sold out, but there is one that sounds really yummy and still has places (at least when I wrote this Sunday!).
Saturday, Oct 30 at 4 pm Autumn Dinner $125

  • Classic Whiskey Sours
  • Shiner Bock Braised Short Ribs with Maple Glaze Skillet Apples and Onions
  • Roasted Pumpkin Salad with Crisped Prosciutto and Grilled Onions with Pumpkin Vinaigrette
  • Crispy Potato Galette with Creamy Herbed Cheese Filling
  • Pear Apple Crisp with Home Made Pecan Ice Cream

If you remember, the owner is Sibby Barrett, a well-known baker and caterer from Dallas. She has her own food product line and is working on a cookbook of class favorites.

Wardrobe additions that say fall

Want to add something to your wardrobe that says fall? I'm not a trend person but you can add something that looks current without reworking your wardrobe.

What are they showing?

  • Military looks- You don't need to wear cargo pants, but an olive or khaki jacket or scarf would look updated.
  • Pendants- A long chain with a single pendant.
  • Animal prints/skins (faux, please)- Just one item will do- a belt or handbag (skins are especially popular here)
  • Kitten heels- I never wore the high heels anyway, but I'll be able to look people in the eye now!
  • Camel & gray
  • Smaller handbags- maybe a clutch with lock & key or smaller shoulder bag.
  • Cuff- But remember that draws the eye down to an area I try to avoid!

As always, great style is what looks good on you!
